Mary Goddard Steck
In SIUC Botany from 1929 to 1939
Mary Goddard Steck was born December 1, 1901 in rural Johnson
County Illinois. She received her bachelor's degree from
Southern Illinois Normal University and went on to receive a
Masters degree from the University of Michigan in 1926. Unlike
many women of that time, she earned a Ph.D. in Botany from Washington
University in St. Louis in 1938. She obtained her degree while
teaching in the Botany Department at SINU from 1929 to 1939.
From 1931 to 1937 she was Curator of the University Museum. During this
time at SINU she was also a Brush Training School critic and an
Assistant Professor in the Allyn Training School, the rank she held
when she left SINU. She then taught in the Chicago junior college
system from 1944-1970. She died November 14, 1986 in Memorial
Hospital of Carbondale at the age of 84. Formerly she was the
wife
of the late Dr. Carl Steck who was director of the Anna State
Hospital. The Mary Goddard Steck scholarship for outstanding
women in botany was established in her name.
