COURSE DESRIPTION

Study of poisonous, medicinal and therapeutic plants, with emphasis on biologically active constituents.  The biochemical basis for the pharmacological effects of these plants will also be covered, along with recent advances in medicinal plant research. are used historically and in modern times, with emphasis on the biologically active constituents.  Laboratory experiments will introduce students to techniques in production, isolation, chemical analysis and biological testing of medicinal compounds from plants.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. To be familiar with plants that have medicinal, therapeutic and poisonous properties
  2. To learn the bioactive components of plants affecting human health
  3. To understand the biochemical basis for currently used plant-based therapies
  4. To gain proficiency in critically analyzing medicinal plant research reports

PREREQUISITES

BIOL 200a and 200b, CHEM 140a or CHEM 200 and 201.

GRADING

Three Exams: 300 Points 451 – 500 A
Final Exam:  100 Points 401– 450 B
Term Paper 50 Points 351– 400  C
Class Presentation 50 Points 301– 350 D
Total       500 Points 300 or less  F

Bonus quizzes will be given from time to time during the lecture period (This may or may not be announced.) The points gained from the quiz will be added to the final exam.
