Financial Assistance


Undergraduate Students

Student Work Positions. The Department of Plant Biology employs a number of students, for up to 20 hours a week, to work in its greenhouses, herbaria, central office, and research laboratories. This includes students who are or are not eligible for Federal Work-study programs. For more information, see the SIUC Financial Aid office.

Departmental Awards. Undergraduate plant biology majors may compete for several monetary awards during the course of a school year. The three awards shown below are offered by the department and additional ones are offered through the College of Science:


Graduate Students

Deadlines. For first consideration for a Fall Assistantship, Feb 15 is the deadline for completed applications. For January Graduate Assistantships, the deadline is November 15. Students can apply at any time but that for priority consideration, they should meet these deadlines.

Research Assistantships and Fellowships. Individual faculty often have assistantships and fellowships through external grant funds. Inquire to the Chairman or specific faculty members you wish to work with. Both assistantships and fellowships including stipends and full waiver of tuition are available to qualified graduate students. See also the Graduate School Financial Assistance page.

Teaching Assistantships. These are available through the Department. Inquire to the Chairman or Director of Graduate Studies regarding availability.

Graduate School Fellowships. Fellowships are awarded for both the Masters and Doctoral levels through the SIUC Graduate School. These awards are competitive, hence a completed application must be submitted by a departmental representative by the posted deadlines.

Delyte and Dorothy Morris Doctoral Fellowship Program. Eligible applicants must be at the beginning of their doctoral work. Therefore, applications prior to entrance into a doctoral program is required. Only applicants who have received no prior degree from SIUC and who have done no graduate work at SIUC are eligible. Applicants must possess the credentials of very promising scholars as indicated by high scholastic standing, excellent scores on standardized tests, outstanding recommendations, and evidence of high potential for research and publication.

Morris fellows will receive $15,000 and a tuition scholarship for up to three years of full-time doctoral study at SIUC. Fellows are not eligible to hold another appointment either within or outside the University. Application deadline is January 15. Contact the Graduate School for application information.

Outstanding Dissertation Award. Also offered by the Graduate School, this university-wide competition is offered each year. Only one dissertation may be nominated and submitted per department.
